Return of the Rocket

So, I've been listening to a lot of sports radio lately, and as a result I've been exposed to a lot of baseball talk.  Here's a list of some recurring themes I've noticed:

- "Carl Pavano" is equivalent to either a horrible joke or a horrible cuss word
- Yankees fans view Mets fans as their annoying, bratty little brother who is clamoring to get some recognition
- Jose Reyes is better than Derek Jeter
- A-Rod is a prissy baby who can't be himself in front of New York City, and will never gain Yankees fans' unwavering love, respect, and dedication until he delivers big time in the playoffs
- Baseball involves a heavy lust for stats

The talk of the town during the past few days has been Roger Clemens and his theatric return to the Yankees.  Now, all discussion about how helpful he'll actually be aside, the fact is that the man is getting paid a boatload of money in this "personal service" contract.  But, this is insignificant to Yankees fans, because 1) it's not their money, and 2) exorbitant payrolls are commonplace, and in fact expected for this organization.

One point that a few radio hosts made was that if the Yankees are struggling, management is expected to do and spend anything it can to help the team get back on track, and that signing Clemens was a no-brainer.

Now, if a baseball team's management would do that for its team and its fans, how much more should we expect our God to do the same for us?

The Yankees have deep pockets, but they are not infinitely deep.  There is a limit to what they can spend.

But our Father's "pockets" are not finite, and there is no limit to what he can and will spend for our best.  In fact, there was no limit to what he has already spent for our liberation.

Yes, Yankees fans should be happy that their team will do anything for their pleasure, but children of God should be even happier that their God can and will do anything to ensure their well-being, satisfaction, and fulfillment, because he has already done it.

"...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6

"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" - Matthew 7:9-11
